If you had your heart set on hardwood flooring but realized that it’s not the best option for your space, you’ve come to the right place. For starters, hardwood is not a good choice for any rooms that are exposed to moisture (anything from kitchens to powder rooms to basements). However, you do have a great option available with luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring.

What is Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring?

Luxury vinyl plank flooring (also known as luxury vinyl) is an affordable, attractive, waterproof floor that looks like hardwood. It has been around for less than 10 years and some call it the flooring innovation of the last decade. LVP is manufactured in long, narrow strips (as opposed to sheet vinyl) that look very similar to hardwood boards. It’s extremely resilient, easy to install and, since it is so pliable, it’s a fantastic flooring choice for uneven subfloors. It’s durable and easy to clean. Oh, and it’s very easy on the wallet compared to hardwood.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring has a simulated wood grain produced by surface graphics and embossing. Some vinyl planks are printed with a distressed look or even “nail holes.” For this type of deeper embossing, a thicker vinyl is used.

For very busy households with children, pets or lots of visitors (in other words, a lot of traffic) it’s best to choose a varied grain pattern, or a low gloss or distressed finish so the luxury vinyl plank flooring will look better longer than flooring with a glossy grain pattern.

LVP with an attached underlayment adds a little cushioning and insulation. It can be installed directly on top of concrete or tile flooring.
